    Need a suggestion

I bought a new Toyota 4runner that I don't want to get banged up so I need an easy destination, preferably within about a sixty mile radius of Fallon. Thank you in advance.

The Pony Express trail that runs down by the Fallon raceway west to Ft. Churchill, then take the dirt road alongside Ft. Churchill to Dayton. You can also try the dirt road south of the river when you come out by Ft. Churchill that runs west and south. You can either cross the pass into Gardnerville or come out down south by the river (Wellington?).
Some people are as useful as a football bat.

The pony express run is a good start, that is one of the first we did.

    Here are a few others.
Fairview peak has one heck of a view. Get there before the snows come up there. Pretty sure it is clear right now.

There is a Nuclear site here. Not a lot to see but cool bragging rights. come in from the east. The west side routes were nasty last time we were there.

A bit farther out there are some ghost mines south of Middlegate:

Sunrise pass is a nice and also easy run but the far end of it is probably more than 60 miles from Fallon.

All of those are safe for a stock 4Runner.

We put a geocash at the Shoal test site several years ago. Haven’t been back... wonder if it is still there

How about Dixie Valley? Out past Sand Mountain a bit. A bunch of mines and miners cabins. Lots of tanks (tracked vehicles, not big containers.) to see and climb on. Abandon ranch houses.
Its just a road with a few rocks, keep driving!

Are there tanks you can climb on? I thought there were all inside the restricted areas of the range.

There are also some cool earthquake faults out there.

Grimes Point and the roads behind it. A fun place to look for wonder stone as well.

The South side of HWY 50 is a live bombing range and obviously restricted. The North side is isn't live bombing and not restricted. Its been a couple of years since I've been out there, but there was several tanks in different locations around the valley. Just parked with the hatch and openings welding shut.

Seven Troughs (site) is pretty sweet. There are still a lot of buildings in good condition. One is built out of brick and you can see a great example of three-chambered hollow brick used for its insulating properties. Very easy drive, but cool site.

The run from Hawthorne to Bodie (california) is about 35 miles via Lucky Boy Pass just a couple miles from Hawthorne. You can also catch Aurora Cemetery and Aurora Crater along the route. If you camp, Wilson Canyon area is close via dirt roads (28 mi). Loopback via Sweetwater Summit (Hwy 338 where the RWIS station is) and good spots to camp there with a cool side trip to Nugent Cabin (actually in calif) - perfectly preserved from - this road gets narrow, easy going easy stream crossing at the cabin, but leaves will be touching paint occasional.

The Kilns north of Warm Springs in the Rawhide Mountain area are perfectly preserved (Hwy 6).

The cabin and the kilns are off the radar of all the dirtbags that have moved into Nevada and trash our State's historic sites with litter and shooting leftovers, so they are nice clean sites to visit. Have Fun.
