KTMB’s Great Community Cleanup event focuses on the cleanup of illegal dump sites in the open spaces surrounding the Truckee Meadows as well as the removal of noxious weeds before they bloom and spread. Items removed from the open spaces include appliances, furniture, yard waste, hazardous waste, vehicles and more. Because trash attracts trash, it is imperative to clean up trash in the open spaces before they become extremely hazardous. Each year, more than 700 volunteers attend to help keep our community beautiful.

Education is an important ingredient to preventing illegal dumping which is why KTMB offers it’s Recycling Guide free to the community and provides in-class education to area youth inspiring them to become community stewards.

KTMB began conducting open space cleanups in 2001, mobilizing groups of volunteers to help preserve and maintain publicly-owned areas within the Truckee Meadows. In 2006, Keep Truckee Meadows Beautiful, working with Washoe County Regional Parks and Open Space, Washoe County Environmental Health, City of Sparks, Bureau of Land Management, United States Forest Service, and the City of Reno established the Great Community Cleanup. As a result of this collaboration, KTMB and municipal partners realized it takes more than just cleaning up illegal dump sites to prevent illegal dumping, thus the Illegal Dumping Task Force was created to address the best ways to educate the Truckee Meadows community.

You can report illegal dumping by calling the ‘dump hotline’ – (775) 329-DUMP.
KTMB’s Great Community Cleanup 2017 results:
24 sites across the Truckee Meadows
    780 Volunteers
233 tires were removed during the event from open spaces.
82,100 pounds of trash was removed from the open spaces and parks.
48,590 of green waste was removed from hiking trails and parks.
This is a total of 130,690 pounds of waste collected and removed from our shared spaces in the Truckee Meadows.

A large segment of the OHV community will have a large base camp set up on chimney drive, just uphill from water tanks. Please join the fun and Chef Joe will once again serve up a hot trip tip lunch with all the trimmings.
