Anyone here do any precision shooting?

I've recently been more interested in shooting more precisely. None of my guns were particularly accurate, most of them were old military rifles. My commercial Savage model 116, 30-06 was fairly accurate and a good hunting rifle, but had very heavy recoil.

I was playing with AR builds last year and decided to build a semi-precision AR-15 about 4 months ago. I finally got all the parts and got it put together a few weeks ago. It was basically a budget build with an upgraded barrel, trigger, stock and grip. I played a bit with different factory ammo and didn't get the groups I wanted.

Last weekend my dad came to visit and brought a suppressor on his NFA trust which I'm a trustee on. He also brought a Ruger Precision Rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor that he can really school me with. With the suppressor on and shooting Federal American Eagle bulk 55 grain .223 it was grouping nice! After sighting it in I took aim at a 3/4" red dot from 100 yards. 10 shots, most through the center and every one touching the dot. A quarter covered all 10. I love that suppressor!

I'll need to experiment with some muzzle devices to try out, since my dad didn't leave the suppressor with me. I'd like to see if I can get 1/2 moa out of it with the right ammo. I'd also like to try taking it out to longer distances.

And I already have plans for a 6.5 Creedmoor.

Does anyone here do any precision or long range shooting? Know of any places to set up targets out to 600 yards?

I have my .308 set up pretty nicely for shooting at roughly 600 yards. The carson city range is where I usually go. I haven't shot at 600 yards yet but my scope is hitting a tight group at 200 yards and scope is sighted to adjust to 600 easily. It's my nikon BDC. I was going to try the washoe range to get to 600+.

6.5 Creedmore must be a good round, my son's hitting targets @ 1200 yards. Washoe Regional shooting facility on Pyramid has steel targets @ 700 yards.

Once I get some consistent 100 yard groups I'll move out to 200 yds +. Washoe range works for 200 yds, and you can shoot at steel out to 900 +, but they wouldn't let us set up targets past 200.

Everything I've been hearing about 6.5 Creedmoor makes me want one bad. My dad shot a 5 round group of 1 1/4" at 500 yds with his RPR and Hornady ELD 140 grain ammo. That is the kind of shooting I want to be doing.

The washoe range won't let you go past 200? It's been probably 5+ years since I've been there. Well there's placing the desert that have flat enough lands to go to 600+ Though I think that now it's all under the indian res control or inside the washoe county no shooting zones. So probably need to rethink those spots. Probably have to head out to somewhere around further east or south.

I'm not experienced at it at all but I did buy the savage version of your 6.5 creedmore recently and wanted to get into the longer range stuff. I also just got my Remington 700 in .308 back from http://www.suppressedarmament.com/ here in town. He threaded the barrel for me and put on his muzzle brake/suppressor mount. I bought a suppressor from him and am waiting on the paperwork still.

Palomino gun club. Facebook or website. There was a guy who previously posted all their 22 shoots here.

Thanks for the post about the Palomino Valley gun club. It looks like they use the Washoe County Regional Shooting Facility. I'm not sure how that works, since they wouldn't let my dad and I set up targets past 200 yds. Maybe it's different for club members or they have a different range for that.

I wish I'd seen this yesterday. The Palomino club is having a 600/1000 yard high power practice shoot right now (8am-11am). It would have been nice to at least go out there and talk to some of the people doing it. I could have given 600 yards a shot, but I'm sure I'm not really ready yet.

Cashmoney, let me know how you like the Savage. I'm guessing you got the 10/110 BA stealth? That is one that I was considering, but I'm leaning more towards the Ruger. I was pretty impressed with my dad's and it has excellent reviews for an entry level gun.

Yeah that's the one I got. I liked the feel of it better than the Ruger. Both from what I hear are great guns. I believe my buddy had the same Savage too and he was more than happy with his with factory match ammo.

I haven't handled the Savage yet. I do like the feel of the Ruger, but I'm not crazy about the adjustment procedure on the butt stock. To adjust length of pull you have to loosen the screw that holds the cheek height adjustment as well, which means you end up having to readjust the cheek height. Once everything is set it's solid, but if more than one person is using it, it could be a pain. I would probably swap out the butt stock for a Luth-AR MBA 3 like I have on my AR-15.

I have a few Mosins, Russian 91/30, M44, M38, Finish M39, and a Polish M44. A Czech Mauser and Turkish Mauser, and an Enfield (No.4 MK1 I think). They are fun to shoot, but only the M39 was less than 2 or 3 MOA. I did just get the stuff to reload 7.62x54r so I may find a better load for the 91/30 or M39. Without optics they will never be truly precise in my hands though.
