Is it worth buying a new vehicle outside of Washoe County?

I am going to be looking at new trucks in the next few months and I am trying to figure out if it is worth looking in Carson, Fallon, etc. where the sales tax is lower. Someone (I am not sure that they are credible) told me the DMV will charge you the difference in the sales tax if you pay less in sales tax on the sales price of the vehicle. Anyone have any advice?

Its a .665% difference in sales tax between Reno and Carson City. On a $50k truck you'll only save $332.50. Sometimes you can find better deals outside Reno though. A lot of times the smaller dealerships are more willing to deal. When I bought my Tacoma a couple years ago Dolan wouldn't budge, Carson City Toyota gave me a good deal and was way easier to work with.

When you go to register, if where you bought it taxes were less they will charge you the difference you didn't pay on your new registration. So tax wise it shouldn't matter where you buy they will stick it to you no matter what. But I'd definitely shop around there's deals to be had

If you're a Costco member, you can go to the Costco Auto Program and see what kind of price you can get through them and see what dealers will honor it. We did that when purchasing a Subaru here in Reno and got an additional $1000 off of the dealer marked down price. They didn't "haggle" any more on the price though. Just a thought.

Reno car dealerships seem to think we live on an island and its impossible to shop around. Figure out exactly what you want and then call/email every dealership within 200 miles. You can save a bunch of money. If the dealership is experienced selling to out of state buyers, they will charge you the appropriate tax.

Nice! Yeah, I didn't do the math on that one, but I am glad to know what extra I might have to pay at the DMV. Thanks for the info everyone!

I bought a car on line, had it shipped, and they did the paperwork for me. Charged me the correct tax, even did the dmv paperwork for me. No trip to the waiting line for me.
