    Swap Meet - FAIL

    Okay,

I'll take this as my failure.

The Nevada 4 Wheel Drive Association held another Swap Meet at 4-Wheel Parts in Sparks on Saturday.

I had stepped up after the Spring swap in order to improve the event and increase attendance in both vendors and buyers. I figured with better marketing/publicity this event could easily grow.

Well the turn out for the Fall event was much less than the Spring event. My failure. I'm not sure what else to do. It was on websites, forums, Facebook and 4-Wheel Parts even did an email blast for the event. I was not able to secure a food source for the day as either a BBQ or food truck. Specific apologies go out to those who did volunteer to flip burgers and showed up to work. I should have emailed everyone back that the food portion was not going to happen.

I still think this could be a great event. I would like, as I'm sure N4WDA would like, to hear from you guys about how we could make this better. Please post up and let us know what we could change to make this successful. Let us know if there's just too many online marketplaces and in person swaps will never be popular again.

    Thanks,

    Doug

PS - this is on chit-chat because of a previous post about not enough new posts in chit-chat. If a moderator really want's to move it to "Events", go right ahead.

I think a big problem is that there were also other events this weekend as well as a general drying up of wheelers. Not sure if they all disappeared or just all got too busy. I know that putting on a run gets harder and harder to find people who can get away, myself included. 5 years ago a stocker run on here would get 7-10 rigs. Now, 2-5 is a good turnout.

I had the same questions you just posed when I left the swap meet. I was fortunate to get smoking deals on a few things but I could see the disappointment on the faces of the guys there.

People don't have the attention span for a full day event when you can see 90% of everything available for sale on clist or fbook.

Got there 11ish (thinking it started at noon) and barely 3 vendors present. One rig had lots of tools but for most part it was dead. Radio remotes? Prize giveaways? Hype the rock pile? Food truck is better that fiddling with a cook shack. As noted above, public gatherings re dwindling. There were several different runs sat, plus a wolf pack game that night. More and more small, splinter groups are doing their own invite only runs so the available pool is shrinking.

I'm betting it didn't help that there was an air show in minden this weekend too.

Air show, gun show, Wolf Pack game, swap meet... if was just not the best weekend to put on an event. I know it's hard to plan around all the events in the area, but it's why I didn't make it over there.

So do we try harder to find an empty weekend or do we stop holding the swap?

I think if people wanted to go, they would have went. I'm guilty, chose to spend time with my daughter.

    Suggestions include
Once a year, warm spring day.

Start it later, 8am reminds me of the ham radio swaps. Everyone is leaving by 10. Start it at 10, done at 1?

Used is great but broken is trash. Don't bring your trash and demand top dollar. I've got some sway bar disconnects from the last swap. Bushings suck, threads are messed up, no pins only $150!

How about a raffle? 4wp might offer up something, I will buy donuts!

Work with maccabee arms and make it a BBQ, day on the range and behind the range the Swap meet...

I cant think of how but integrate ham radio into it.. As far as I know those are three most popular hobbies here

Put the swap meet and ham stuff far enough away hearing protection isnt required.

EDIT: and bring some reno4x4 shirts.. mine is about to fall apart.. I'd take a day off work if I had to for that, but I agree on the hours.. I dont get up that early and families bringing the rug rat might appreciate the later start time to get the kids ready..

Thats another thing, something for the rugrats?

EDIT 2: talk to the vendors on the site..

Personally I’d never go to a swap meet for anything, as listed above I can find any parts I want online pretty much. Going to a swap meet is a gamble of your time hoping you might find something. Battle Born Wheels earlier this year held Rock Crawlers and Brews at Shoe Tree Brewing and that had a pretty big turnout with some vendors, rti ramp and I think a raffle. Maybe coordinate with them to host the swap meet at the same time and I’m sure you’d do a lot better.

Was at shoe tree last night. Good stuff!

I forgot to put it on my Google Calendar. Apparently my brain doesn't work unless I see it right in front of me on my desktop. I did get a good deal on some ammo at the SummitRacing meet. Keep trying!

So I'm trying to compile the input. most of you think it could work but it needs dialing in to be successful.

Date: a weekend with nothing else going on

Time: start later, 9 or 10am go until 2pm

Location: 4WP, gun range, Summit, w/ Rock Crawlers & Brews, other event/location

Food: 1st choice - get trucks, 2nd choice BBQ w/ volunteers

Add-ons: RTI, rock pile, raffle, doughnuts, coffee,

Vendor booths w/ deals from vendors and ‘host’ property

Other booths: N4WDA, Reno4x4, Cal4, FOTR, RTF, CORVA, BRC, The Other Rubicon, local clubs

Spring (w/ Reno Motorsports show), fall (w/ Silver State Poker Run), both

Volunteers: we need more people to step up and make this happen
    -overall lead
    -coffee/doughnut coordinator
    -lunch coordinator
    -raffle chair
-club to run RTI & rock pile
    -publicity
    -liaison w/ host
    -vendor chair

I've got to learn not to raise my hand to volunteer. I've got too much going on and shouldn't have taken this project on, but I did and failed. Let's get some new blood to step up. I'm willing to help but not lead. Anyone? I'm sure Larry from N4WDA will work with you to make it happen.

    Thoughts?

I spend a lot of time on FB and didnít know about the swap meet until the night before. (Posting in the buy/sell/crawler swap/big boy toys groups would help alot). Iíve showed up at a couple of swap meets at 4wp mid morning and everybody was already packed up and gone. Last weekend was chukar season opener too.

Don’t beat yourself up. I don’t volunteer for anything after the 3rd kid was born. Hell, I’ve only made four runs in four years...
