Ever thought you might wander upon a corpse?

July 5th I went to explore some structures I noticed on sat imagery between Jessup and Nightingale. On the way back I decided to swing by some mining ruins to the east of Jessup, I've been there before but wanted to get some more details pics of one building which I suspect was used as an assay office.

When I rounded the corner, noticed a late model Chevy Colorado parked in the dirt road leading to the top of the mining works. My first thought was "what a twit, parking in the middle of the road". When I passed off trail on the driver side I was concentrating on weaving between brush so as to not cause any excess damage, however I noticed a bit of a smell like week old road kill.

Got to the top, took my pictures. Looked around for signs of mountain bike tracks or foot prints and nothing except my own. That combined with the roadkill smell, decided I'd better walk down and take a look in the vehicle, and what do you know... corpse. Sitting in drivers seat, luggage and backpack in passengers seat. Both windows open, body looked very desiccated suspect a week or more gone.

Needless to say no cell service. On my way out took some pics of the vehicle, main intent was getting LP#. Rode 4 miles back to my truck, called Churchill county Sheriff dispatch and waited for officer(s) to respond. Led them back, gave statement, etc.

By the time I had filled out a statement, the responding officer and detective had pulled the contents of the truck and spread them out in the bed. Responding officer said they saw no signs of foul play, no drug paraphernalia and no firearms.

I've been in contact with the Sheriff. They positively ID'd, notified next of kin. Still waiting on toxicology to wrap up the case.

    I knew it was possible.

Christ on a cracker. I've been out that way more times than I can count.

With as many miles as I cover in the boonies every fall, you'd think I'd have seen something. I can't help but think about that kind of stuff. Is someone going to stop me and ask for "help"? Am I ever going to stumble upon illicit activities and be a witness? Will I ever see someone who got bit by a snake and died leaning against a rock? I dunno man, there's a lot of country out there and not a damn soul for miles in every direction.

That's quite a story. I suppose it really is just a matter of time...

And presumably 'dumb luck'.. I'm glad I was able to get closure for someone, and get the remains properly taken care of... sad though it is. Imagine if some idiot with dreams of youtube gold had found it??? who knows what kind of stupidity could have ensued....

Yikes. Running into something out of the ordinary is always on my mind. Corpse would be top of the “oh shit” list on my book.

Friends of mine in high school ran into a number of nice street bikes all hidden under camo netting once, nope’d right the hell out of there.
Only wheeled Kia Sorento in Nevada on 31's.
