That's unbelievable. I knew rattler bites were bad news, but I didn't know they were that bad. I guess it is because it was a very bad bite to begin with and then the time involved before treatment started. That poor kid is going to have some nasty scars the rest of his life.

Think Ill be a little more cautious of rattlers when I'm walking through the rocks next Chuker season that's for sure

Probably a major factor was how long it took to get treatment.

Scheels carries plastic gaitors that protect below the knees. They also have chaps that protect the entire leg.

I'm no expert on rattlesnakes but that seems pretty extreme. Perhaps an allergic reaction was involved.

Undoubtedly due to the time it took to get to medical care (over 4 hours). I've seen a couple like that in the past 15 years.

That can't be real, can it? Seems a little out there from a bite. I'd expect severe swelling and/or death, but not skin splitting apart and all that.

They cut the skin on purpose, the swelling was so bad it was causing compartment syndrome. Read his story, it explains it better.

Ah, I can't see the link here at work. All I see is the pic in this thread (thanks for sharing BTW). I guess I still need to read it when I get home.

Thats Crazy! It sucks that I have to deal with Rattlesnakes on a daily basis out doing Archaeology. Here's a pic I took of one that I ended up a little too close to. I was heading back to the truck and came off some rocks and dmn near on top of this guy, At the closest i was maybe 4 or 5 feet from him.
