Yes, go through the gate on the side of the fire station, follow the main road up past the staging area where you'll see a locked gate no trespassing sign, pass that and then cross through the dry creekbed back onto the road behind the gate, follow it all the way up.

the 1st gate at the NDF fire station is open-- just respect its condition when u find it-- if open, leave it; if closed, close it behind you. The 2ed gate is for access to private property that vectors west from there, however, there is a well defined go around to the north down into a gully and back up to rejoin the public road and this avoids the private property.

The HA are working w/ the USFS to have the go around formally established as THE trail. The sloap to the SW is slated for, i think, 5000 homes, however given the current housing market, i bet those homes are a ways off in the future.

Once u head up garson road just befoer the switchbacks, look for the USFS sign-- we installed that 2 years back and its suprisingly free of vandalism, damage, etc. From there, head on up the hill thru the aspens, past the microwave/repeater facility and u'll soon hit big meadow. Just stay on the main trail and do nottake the spur roads. Headed east from big meadow u'll hit hunter lake and find another sign we installled.

    have fun!

FYI, going up that way is pretty boring. It's not really 4 wheeling, more like a regular dirt road. I'll bet you could get a Miata up that way.

Just before ya get to Big Meadow, theres a small creek crossing that has a campsite on the left, and a split in the road. Take the left at the split to get to Big Meadow, its only a few hundred feet up, but its hard to tell that through the trees.
"So, can ya tell me what exactly does freedom mean, if I'm not free to be as twisted as I wanna be?"

Shouldnt be a problem gettin to the meadow, but the ride over to Hunter Lake could get rough. Its not undoable, tho.

So it's the gate next to the fire house that you need to go through, right by their parking lot?

There's all kinds of no trespassing signs! How is anyone supposed to know about this place?
