In the search for more power, Toyota Land Cruiser Question

So I found out this weekend that project slowyota when fully loaded with gear is a serious turd when going up hills. Planing on running 1ton axles and 40" tires is only going to add a ton of wieght and drivetrain loss that no amount of low gearing will recover for street purposes.

so my question is, will the older gear style Toyota T-cases work behind the 98 and newer landcrusier trannies? and also if they won't, what options do I have for getting low gearing for it? The only reason I say 98 and newer Land Crusier is it seems to be the only one that has the upgraded power v8 in it and 275hp sounds a lot better to me that the probably 80hp that the 22RE I got now has and I don't see swapping an engine in it to be all that economical in the long run nor do I have time to complete that project.

or would I be better off looking at the 03 and up 4runners with the 4.0v6 or optional 4.7l v8? or the 4 door crew cab tacomas? and what tcase options might i be able to get with one of those? I'd think about the FJ's but they are still wanting a lil to much cash cause it looks like they are still going for 20K

We have an 04 4runner with the 4.0, it's pretty peppy as long as you aren't towing. Don't know how it will do if you lift it and run 1 tons with 40's, but it does just fine stock.

The difference between the V8 and V6 wasn't enough in seat of the pants to justify the extra $$ at purchase and the 3-5 mpg difference when we bought. Honestly, unless you are in a big hurry to get up a long hill pulling a 5K lb trailer, there isn't enough HP with the V8 to be worth the hassle. Besides, our little 4.0 V6 manages 19-21 MPG mixed driving, city and highway. It will still pull 16-18 at 80+ going to Vegas.

Here's a thread over on Pirate on swaaping a 97 3800 firebird engine into an older toy truck. Lots of knowledge in this thread on toy drivetrains, trannies and t cases.

wouldn't be doing any towing and anything would be better than the 22re i got now. That input is nice to hear though cause i guarentee theres a huge price diff between the 4.0 and 4.7's the only thing I was thinking that might be better in my app is the torque in the v8 comes on at a lower rpm and theres a lil more

a guy at napa suggested a buick 3800 also. But that is much cheaper, but like I say the time thing kills me with the swap idea. I do appreciate the info though, it may end up coming down to that.

3800 is easy to supercharge and it's got 3 things going for it. Availability, Price, Aftermarket support. None of those are applicable to the Toyota engines.

Sorry for the confusion, are you talking about swapping a different engine into your pickup or purchasing a newer vehicle to use instead/in addition to your pickup?

Basically any newer Toyota should meet your needs then. The 95+ 3.4L Tacomas and 4Runners make good power and the 03+ 4.0L Tacomas and 4Runners are even better. Superchargers for both are available from TRD.

The 4.7L 4Runners and Land Cruisers are great too, but the 4.7L actually makes less horsepower than the 4.0L (although quite a bit more torque) and the Land Cruisers are pretty heavy and getting fairly large for trail use.

so the torque of the 4.7 4runner 03 and up is what I should probably be looking for, do you know if you can get an atlas t-case for them at all? all I saw listed was by input splines. I'm pretty sure I'd go with either that 4.7 in the runner or the 4.0 in that or the tacoma, its just nice having all of your gear locked up.

Yes, you can adapt an Atlas to the back of them. Marlin Crawler and Inchworm also have dual case adapters for them, or you could get an Inchworm "lefty", which is a left-hand drop Toyota gear driven transfer case. Check out Joel's 4Runner, it is one of the nicest I've seen.

So are you going to do a solid axle swap on this vehicle? What do you intend to use it for?

    Here is another cool 4Runner.

    http://www.chaosedition.com/

And some great 100 Series Land Cruisers.

    http://shottscruisers.smugmug.com/

The one below is even for sale and will be in Tahoe in a couple of weeks for the Marlin Crawler Roundup. I am sure that they could just leave it with you in Reno if you are interested.

    Don't tell Spressomon that.

The biggest problem with the 100 series (98 and newer LC) is that by the time you add enough trail armor to them you use up a lot of the extra HP. Right now I'm just beating the bejebsus out of the factory plastic bumpers rather than replace them and take the HP/MPG hit. Sliders are a must.

The IFS is an issue as well but I think you are suggesting a SAS??? I like the IFS for Overland travel but it has limits for the more technical trails. More than a 4" lift starts getting very expensive and complicated with IFS.

The V8 will definitively motivate you down the road, as long as you can afford the gas. It kind of sucked having all those ponies under the hood and keeping the speed under 65MPH all the way to Moab this spring. My mileage is around 14MPG if I keep it under 65MPH, over 65 it drops to 12MPG or less. Fully loaded, going 70, I've managed to get it to less than 10MPG. Thats with 33" Toyo MTR's.

With the stock drive train you run into issues with tires over 33" that get expensive very fast. There seems to be a theme here huh?

Beside all that the other kids will laugh at you and call you names if you drive a soccer mom rig. I have deep emotional scars.

Another option might be a 60 series Land Cruiser with a V-8 conversion. It's a pretty straight forward swap and it gives you plenty of capacity for gear, lots of gearing options, and a rig that will still manage trails like Rubicon.

If I found the right FJ60 and could talk my wife out of the UZJ100 I'd go that way. I might miss the heated seats come winter though.

don't mind the gm parts as everything i've ever owned is gm up until a lil bit ago. I just don't have the time or ambition to do a swap and work out all the electrical gremlins and I'm a big fan of A/C since I know how ot work on it and have the tools to do it and it starts gettin difficult to make it work with engine swaps custom lines suck to get made.

I'm definitely planing on swaping in a solid axle in whatever I do, that was the plan with my current run and I got a D60 and D70HD sitting at my shop. I might actually sell those and just wait and save up longer for something stronger and more bling though if I get a newer runner to build up.

The fuel milage thing isn't a problem cause it won't be a daily driver and if I go on a trip like that i'd just tow it behind my Duramax which with something that light would get good mileage and not have to worry if I broke the trail rig.

I'm kinda set on a 4runner or tacoma now after all you guys pointing out the wieght issue of the land crusier which I didn't even think about originally (part of the reason for this thread your guy's input always ends up settin me straight)
Now when you say there is drivetrain issues what would I be looking at? I already plan on replacing the front and rear diff's with something hopefully bullet proof, and dirty harry said that atlas does make cases that will work on them so with that kinda power i'd probably use one of them instead of doubling the stock case. But I would like to go with an auto trans for once since my knees start to hurt bad after working a clutch all day and I don't know if the auto will hold up

One of the reason's I kinda want to go for a newer unit if I sell the 87 runner is i'm a big fan of creature comforts and the newer stuff definitely has it. It just means my project will take longer to get done which would be ok since everyone still does runs like Bodie and Jumbo and stuff

that definitely was a pretty sweet rig. Only bad thing is I hate chasing wiring and other stuff that someone else has done.
