MGL mine area trail breaking run - Nov 8th

The MGL mine is on the East side of Lake Winnemucca, 15 or so miles north of Nixon.

There are a few pictures that Connect posted from our last run of this area. Most of them do not show anything difficult, because with stockers tagging along, we turned around when things got tricky. Here is one of the more fun places we actually ran:

So, this will be a bit of an exploratory trip. I know there are decent trails out there, but I haven’t really run any of them. I expect to do a lot of walking this time as well, but I also intend to take a stab at some of the more interesting canyons.

This type of run lends itself to more prepared rigs due to the unknown nature of things. It might be easier than expected, but it might also be harder, and I would hate to see someone trash their rig when they weren’t ready for it. With that said, I think this run is best suited to rigs with 33”-35” tires and a locker or two. Pinch type obstacles are likely, so rocker protection and other armor is also a good idea.

I want to get out early so that we can do as much as possible with the ever shortening day. The plan is to meet Saturday, Nov 8th at Love’s in Fernley at 8:00AM and head out from there. This should put us at the old MGL mill site around 9:00 if we don’t mess around, and give us a lot of time to wheel before darkness sets in.

Can I tag along for this one?!
This sounds like it could be fun!
Where is "Love’s in Fernley" (never been East on I80 since I moved here in '92) And how long will it take me from Incline Village? ('bout an hour and a half?)
Definitely interested in going...I saw the posts from the last time you went out there.

I have run this several times, I took Slopoke there last year. It goes all the way thru, gets pretty tough. Fun trail...
Close to School Bus Canyon... School Bus Canyon is close to a stock run.

    It's 54 miles from Sparks.

Feel free to join in... I dont know what you are driving, but for reference, I will be in a hacked XJ on 33's and lockers F/R, and there will be at least two other XJs locked on 35's but less hacked. We are a generally a very laid back group, and are just looking for some nice moderate alternatives to Bronco, Twister, etc... We aren't into bashing on our junk, so if things get super nasty, we will typically just turn around or take a different line.

Loves is a truck stop at the first Fernley exit - cant miss it coming east on 80... Ferntucky is about 45 minutes from south Reno, so add that to however long it takes you to get there - hour and a half is probably a good estimate.

I always look forward to seeing new faces on the trail...

    I have an '03 Rubicon on 33's / frt & r bumpers / winch / sliders...I think I will be OK...?

On the fence right now though - my buddy is probably buying a new rig this week and may want me to go out in Carson with him on Saturday. (nice '06 unltd on 33's, but it doesn't have sliders or bumpers on it yet so I don't want to drag him into something that might trash his new rig)

If I can't go, please post up some pics! And I will go next time if I don't make this one...

This is exactly the type of rig I am looking for trails for. Something that will take a locker or two to get through, but won't destroy your rig (no 'Hammers' trails...) Realistically, my junk is basically stock aside from some creative cutting...

I will check the thread in the morning before I head out, so no need to make up your mind right now. If you decide to come, just post up and we will wait.

Don't let Zebaru fool you... his rig is far from stock. It might APPEAR to be stock but trust me those door handles are fake!! If you somehow miss all the tube, chopped top, and boatsides, yeah you could say it looks stock.

That being said I wouldn't expect the trail to be that bad. The ride out there could be done in any stocker and if Zebaru takes us down anything that looks to be ugly you could always opt out and head back. Like he said we are not about destroying our vehicles but we're not afraid to do some challenging stuff either.

The drivetrain is more or less stock - 4.0, AW4, NP231, D30, D44, leafs in the rear, stock control arm locations in the front... I think my 'stocker' on 31's has more lift...

Sure the body is hacked, but it hasnt been dovetailed or narrowed, and I still have all the lights in the factory locations. The door handles are real, they just don't open anything...

Travis's boat sides puts to shame the clearance on my rig with 6 inchs, 35's and replacement rockers!! His mostly "stock" is quite capable...some of that may be the driver, but I dont want to give him too much credit!! J/K...very cool rig, I'm thinking about some tube work on my jeep over the winter and will definetly borrow some of Travis's design!

    Looks like it is:

    Me (Zebaru)
    EricsXJ
    RWKXJ
    wbstretcher
    Yeti (maybe?)

If you change plans, please post up so we don't have to wait around. I will check this thread before I leave - about 7:30

I have plotted up three or four interesting routes to try. If that doesnt keep us occupied, we can go run schoolbus also...

The weather even looks like it will more or less cooperate.

    See you tomorrow...

I'll be there in the morning in a red XJ on 33's. Just finished installing new sliders so they need to be rubbed around a bit. Looks like fun,
