    Awesome!

Not. Got this in my email this morning:

University Police Services and Reno Police are investigating two incidents which occurred on and adjacent to the University. A UNR student reported that at approximately 12:15 A.M. Friday October 2, 2009, he was approached by three suspects in the UNR parking lot at Center and 9th Street. The victim student was robbed at gunpoint and pistol-whipped. The suspects were last seen fleeing south in the alley from the incident. The suspects in this case were described as three African-American males. Suspect #1 was described as bald, wearing a black sweat shirt and a black stocking cap over his face and armed with a gun; Suspect # 2 was described as an African-American male, wearing dread locks, a white bandana over his mouth and also armed with a gun. Suspect # 3 was only described as an African-American male.

Approximately 5 minutes later, a non-student reported that he was robbed at gunpoint adjacent to the SAE house. After the robbery, the victim followed the suspects to 7th and Valley Street, where they shot at the victim, striking him once. The suspects in this robbery were described as a white male with blonde hair and an African-American male with dark hair, both in their twenties.

If you have information concerning this incident, please contact the University Police at 334-COPS (2677). University Police Services also wants to take this time to remind you of the following safety tips:

    • If you know you are going to be studying and/or working late, plan ahead as to how you will get home safely.
    • Use Campus Escort by calling 742-6808, or University Police by calling 334-COPS (2677) or 745-6195.
    • Contact University Police by dialing 334-COPS (2677) or 911 if you observe a suspicious person or situation.
    • Make personal safety your number one priority.
    • AWARENESS, AVOIDANCE, AND RISK REDUCTION IS THE BEST WAY TO AVOID BECOMING A VICTIM.

This message is being sent in compliance with the timely warning provision of Title II of Public Law 101-542 34, CFR 668.46 (e), the Crime Awareness and Campus Security Act.

**** that, let me, a responsible, permitted citizen carry my gun on campus. I'm not going to shoot my teachers or my classmates.
Wouldn't personal safety, as they stated is the most important, being allowed a means to protect myself?

This is all I sent back to them:
Wouldn’t making personal safety my number one priority (as suggested in the below bullet point) be made much easier if I, a responsible citizen and student with a concealed weapons permit, were allowed to carry a tool on campus designed specifically for the purpose of helping ensure my personal safety?

[sarcasm] OMG WTF why would you ever need to carry a gun on campus? you ccw people are fing paranoid blah blah penis extension [/sarcasm]

I wish incidents like this would encourage Glick up there to use his authority to allow students to CCW. Obviously the "no gun" policy of UNR isn't stopping the criminal element.

Letters/emails to the admin will likely go ignored. But I'm still eager to hear how/if they react!

Some people have written letters directly to Glick in the past, and these are examples of his responses:

Dont know that would be a question for a lawyer.

I dont know that they have any legal grounds other than trespassing you.

Some states have weird laws involving schools(even universities)

NRS 193.140 Punishment of gross misdemeanors. Every person convicted of a gross misdemeanor shall be punished by imprisonment in the county jail for not more than 1 year, or by a fine of not more than $2,000, or by both fine and imprisonment, unless the statute in force at the time of commission of such gross misdemeanor prescribed a different penalty.

And it's likely to cause the sheriff to pull your permit.

I agree that CCW permits should be honored within the school as long as the person is over 21 and not living on campus. A dorm situation with a gun would be terrible. I received the email regarding the recent mugging as well, and I really don't think that a concealed gun would have helped the victim. If 3 guys catch you off guard with a gun to your head the best thing you can do is cooperate at least until they don't have a bead on your head. Anyways... I can understand why this would still spark the question about CCWs on campus. Christ, you'd think that after the Virginia Tech incident some states would start to rethink this. Just my .02.

And IF a situation arises and I have to draw, let alone shoot, what then? I protect a life, but lose the right to carry (and defend life in the future), and possibly end up in jail?

It is very hard to say this, but it isn't worth it... And that's the part that's crap! As permit holders, we shouldn't feel like we're between a rock and a hard place. But I will say this much, if anything does happen in front of someone who carries, and they don't have a weapon to defend the life in question, it will be a sad day. It almost makes our gun rights in this state a joke...

i think this is some kind of crazy right wing propaganda. this could not have happened, because EVERYONE knows (including people in masks) that they don't let guns on campus. so they couldn't have been guns. maybe they were cell phones or a wii controller. and they were just asking the "victim" which way to the comic book store.

man you guys are a bunch of gun packin redneck racists.

While it's unlikly the need to use will ever come up, would you rather be carrying and not need it or not carry and need it? I'm not saying you should break the law, that's your decesion, you (as do all of us) have the choice.

Yes, concealed means concealed, however, as I have accepted the responsibility to carry a firearm under the laws provided by the state of Nevada, I will adhere to those laws. It does no good to our fragile image to have a CCW'er caught with a firearm on campus. I suspect that even if someone stopped a murder who had already killed several people, the individual would still be hung out to dry.

I will carry my folding knife and pepper spray and do my best to avoid being in a critical situation.
